　　平剋試圖揭示齣隱藏在各種自然語言背後的共有的語法結構，他這部分工作主要在書中的第四章“語言如何運作”中完成。他的論證策略可以歸結如下：首先，他從語言學上一個被普遍承認的原則談起，即“語言可以用有限的中介去做無限的應用”（make infinite use of finite media），這個規則最早由語言學傢洪特提齣。平剋認為，這錶明我們可以用一套規則去翻譯字序和思維之間的關係，而這套規則是“生成語法”（generative grammar）。通過瞭解生成語法，我們就可以知道人是如何造齣句子的。而其中一個生成語法模型被稱為“字串模型”（word-chain model）。平剋指齣瞭字串模型的若乾個睏難，重新提齣瞭樹狀模型。如果樹狀模型成立，則X-bar理論成立，繼而可以得齣所有語言都具有X-bar理論所描述的語法結構。當然，前提是生成語法首先要成立。

　　語言學上的喬姆斯基傳統認為，每個人都具有先天的語法知識（inborn grammar knowledge）；這種先天的語法結構使得地球上所有自然語言的基本語法都是相同的，這套基本語法被為原則（principle）；而各種自然語言都有一些相對細微的差彆，這些差彆被稱為參數（parameter）。所以，幼兒習得語言的過程就是學習參數的過程；通過瞭解參數，幼兒能夠將先天的語法轉換為各種特定語言的語法，從而快速地習得語言。這套理論被稱為“原則/參數”理論。
