Mary Batten (1937, in Smithfield, Virginia, United States) is an American writer of science books for children and adults. She is also known for writing television productions, films, and magazines, and has won several awards concerning her work in these areas.

Each chapter discusses facets of these mostly insect-eating plants, how they attract, hold, and digest their hapless prey. Pictures show a variety of plants within the family and support the text with illustrations of habitat and specific insects or other animals found nearby. A mention of Charles Darwin tells how he studied sundew touch and sense of taste for twenty years before he wrote a book on the subject. No index but there's enough information here to help young report writers, or less able older ones, discuss the hows and whys of carnivorous plants as well as interest the casual browser in this fascinating botanical topic."
