那一天不可能去散步了。不错，我们早上已经在片叶无存的灌木林中逛了一个钟头；但是，自从吃午饭的时候起（如果没有客人，里德太太是很早吃午饭的），冬日的凛冽寒风就送来了那样阴沉的云和那样透骨的雨，这就不可能再在户外活动了。

　　我重又低头看书，看的是比维克①的《英国禽鸟史》。一般说来，这本书的文字部分我不大爱看，但是有几页导言，我虽说是个孩子，却也不能完全当作空白翻过去。那几页导言写到海鸟常去的地方；写到只有海鸟居住的“孤寂的岩石和海岬”；写到挪威的海岸，从最南面的林讷斯内斯角②或者纳斯到北角③，沿着海岸线，点缀着许多海岛——那里，北冰洋卷起巨大的旋涡，围绕着世界尽头光秃凄凉的海岛咆哮，大西洋的惊涛骇浪激荡起落，注入风雨交加的赫布里底群岛④。
