由於曆代藏書傢中，善本肯定是舊本，那些抄寫、刻印年代較近的隻能是普通本，如晚清藏書傢丁丙在其《善本書室藏書誌》的編例中，規定收書範圍是：1、舊刻；2、精本；3、舊抄；4、舊校。他按照那個時代的標準，將舊刻規定為宋元版書，精本為明代精刻。依據這一劃分，隨著時間的推移，收藏傢心目中的善本的定義年代界限也日益後移。民國時期，明刻本漸漸進入舊刻行列，二十世紀中期以後，乾隆以前刻本全都變成瞭善本，甚至無論殘缺多少，有無錯訛，均以年代劃界。70年代末，《中國善本書總目》開始編纂，在確定收錄標準和範圍時，規定瞭“三性”、“九條”，這應該是對善本概念的一個完整周詳的錶述。
