　　美棠的日子其實很苦，本是大傢閨秀的她從小吃喝用度自是不用愁，偏偏生於動蕩的大時代，世事變幻，生活落得貧苦，丈夫又被派遣勞教，不得不打散工掙錢以幫補傢計。她信裏常常提到錢不夠用，好多東西需要購置。後來得知平如身體有恙，便不再談起拮據的事情，倒是囑咐他少寄錢迴傢，多吃營養食物。

　　平如在安徽勞教的二十二年間，他們倆寄瞭很多封書信。平如把美棠寄來的信都一一收好，而平如寄迴傢的信卻沒有被保存。心裏便總是覺得美棠愛平如並不如平如愛她之深。
