The story starts with the remarkable speed with which Paul grew—by the age of one week, he was wearing his father's clothes. As he grew, Paul became the fastest and strongest lumberjack of them all. He drew together a team that worked hard to fell trees, creating the lumber that would be used to build homes, schools, churches, and whole towns. This crew needed to eat, and they consumed prodigious amounts of food, especially pancakes, soup, and milk. 周宏涛与蒋介石家族为姻亲，但与蒋介石更为亲密的关系是，祖父周骏彦曾任奉化县龙津学堂学监时，正巧蒋介石正在此学习，与周骏彦有师生之谊。因为这层关系，与蒋纬国同岁的周宏涛幼时就与蒋介石有一面之缘。他就读东吴大学政经系，抗日军兴时转到武汉大学政治系继续就读，毕业后辗转进入蒋介石侍从室工作，担任侍从秘书，接替即将出国留学的俞国华。他侍从秘书的工作是为蒋介石把国外发来的电文译成中文，以及整理蒋下达的军政命令，再呈蒋签核，蒋介石认为需要特别补充的，即在手令上批示，深得蒋介石父子的信赖。他的叙述不可谓不准确。
