There is no arguing the rich con tributions and enduring popularity of both Dr. Seuss and James Stevenson in the world of children's literature. Despite (or, perhaps, because of) their individual cre dentials, I Am Not Going to Get Up Today is a disappointment. The story of a little boy who refuses to get out of bed holds promise, but Dr. Seuss' rhymes are un even and forced, lacking the natural ca dence and choice of terms so necessary for the success of a beginning reader for mat. Stevenson's identifiable watercolor and ink illustrations are loose and fluid but border on messy. There is not a positive meshing of text and illustration in this book; readers never get the feeling that they belong together. All factors combine to make this book less than satisfying.

Theodor Seuss Geisel - better known to millions of his fans as Dr. Seuss is quite simply the most beloved children’s book author in the world.

Brilliant, playful, and always respectful of children, Dr. Seuss charmed his way into the consciousness of four generations of youngsters and parents. In the process, he helped millions of kids learn to read.

Dr. Seuss was born Theodor Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 2, 1904. After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1925, he went to Oxford University, intending to acquire a doctorate in literature.

Geisel published his first children's book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, in 1937, after 27 publishers rejected it.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1984, an Academy Award, three Emmy Awards, three Grammy Awards, and three Caldecott Honors, Geisel wrote and illustrated 44 books. While Theodor Geisel died on September 24, 1991, Dr. Seuss lives on, inspiring generations of children of all ages to explore the joys of reading.

首先，阅读能够满足孩子智力快速发展的需求。日本学术界曾有研究表明：0～6岁的孩子，他们的大脑处于高速发育期，其智力的发展可以占到一生的 80%；而6～17岁的孩子则只占20%。因此，孩子在六岁之前，他们智力的发展速度是最快的。而这段时期，是子大脑各区域神经细胞发育的最佳时期，比如听觉、语言、运动等能力都会基本发育完善。 在这段时期，如果父母能够在繁忙的工作中，抽出一些时间，注意培养孩子的早期阅读，使其通过一些图文并茂的视觉材料、变化多端的阅读形式，以及丰富多彩的知识，给孩子的大脑带来一些刺激的话，是能够加快孩子大脑的发育和成熟，并促进孩子的智力发展的。   其次，阅读还能培养孩子的语言能力。我们知道，0～6岁是孩子语言发育的敏感期。他们从咿呀学语开始，到可以比较自如地运用语言完整表达自己的想法，都是在入学以前就完成的。在这个重要时期，孩子的大脑如果能受到一定的外界刺激，就能建立起一种稳定的大脑结构，并使语言能力得到极大的促进。而早期阅读就是对孩子大脑进行全面刺激的最佳手段，是提高孩子语言表达能力的最佳方法。   另外，阅读还能够满足孩子的好奇心和求知欲。孩子在六岁之前，对外部世界抱有一种强烈的好奇心，他们对陌生世界的一切事物都充满了探索的激情。
