作者简介

Marina Lewycka was born in Kiel, Germany at the end of the war and grew up in England. She is the author of three bestselling novels: A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian, Two Caravans and We Are All Made of Glue.

　　故事开始于八十四岁父亲要与三十六岁“波提切利的出水维纳斯”——乌克兰尤物瓦伦蒂娜结婚的电话，这时候，两个因为母亲遗产而已经进入敌对状态的姐妹，不由自主地开始捍卫父亲，其实是捍卫已经过世两年的母亲在家庭里还存在的影子力量，姐姐说“我们必须捍卫他，为了妈妈的缘故。虽说他毫无用处，可她还是我们家庭的一份子，我们不能让他获胜”，也在就在一步步抵御外敌入侵的过程，妹妹明白，“大姐头还和我在一条船上！”，她慢慢了解了自己的家族史，逐渐理解了爱钱如命的姐姐，理解她何以不追究过往——因为“过去肮脏不堪。就像个下水道。你不该在那里玩，别管它，忘掉它”，由此，两人最终回归成为一致御敌的好姐妹，分工合作，终于让乌克兰美女离开了自己的家回乌克兰去了。

　　对于学习拉丁语的学生来说，这部词典是最佳的伴侣，因为“拉丁语—英语”的部分不仅包含动词的所有重要形式（如mitto, mittere, misi, missum），它还另外加上了动词的完成时形式（比如misi perf of mitto，即：misi为mitto完成时形式），为初学者提供宝贵的帮助，消除了查找单词来源的烦恼和困惑。每一词条的解释简明经典，而且这部词典回避“通过同源英语词解释拉丁语的单词”，比如拉丁语的occupatio被解释为taking possession，没有用英语的occupation。换言之，这部词典用很丰富的英语词汇来解释每个拉丁单词。在那些非常关键的单词那里也有一些搭配的词组，比如capio, capere（拿）：initium ~ （开始）。
