作者簡介

Marina Lewycka was born in Kiel, Germany at the end of the war and grew up in England. She is the author of three bestselling novels: A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian, Two Caravans and We Are All Made of Glue.

　　對於學習拉丁語的學生來說，這部詞典是最佳的伴侶，因為“拉丁語—英語”的部分不僅包含動詞的所有重要形式（如mitto, mittere, misi, missum），它還另外加上瞭動詞的完成時形式（比如misi perf of mitto，即：misi為mitto完成時形式），為初學者提供寶貴的幫助，消除瞭查找單詞來源的煩惱和睏惑。每一詞條的解釋簡明經典，而且這部詞典迴避“通過同源英語詞解釋拉丁語的單詞”，比如拉丁語的occupatio被解釋為taking possession，沒有用英語的occupation。換言之，這部詞典用很豐富的英語詞匯來解釋每個拉丁單詞。在那些非常關鍵的單詞那裏也有一些搭配的詞組，比如capio, capere（拿）：initium ~ （開始）。

　　隨著小說的推進，看見兩姐妹妄圖將滿口滿腦理想主義的父親從對寄托在瓦倫蒂娜身上的烏剋蘭式懷舊迷戀之中拉迴來，父親和姐姐經曆過的“烏剋蘭大飢餓”和“肅清運動”等等的陰影便時隱時現地暴露齣來，甚至納粹集中營也時時閃現，而且那些暗影其實一直存在，隻是“他們是如何懷著深鎖在心中的可怕秘密度過自己的餘生的？他們怎麼還能種植蔬菜，修理摩托車，送我們上學，擔心我們的學習成績？但是他們那麼做瞭。”作者瑪琳娜·柳薇卡這樣寫道，也讓讀者看到，也正因為這些可怕的秘密，令著迷瞭烏剋蘭尤物瓦倫蒂娜的父親一心想要做“英雄救美”壯舉，也一心想幫助瓦倫蒂娜培養她那個所謂智力超常其實中等的孩子進入英國的名校受教育。

　　書中言辭極其幽默俏皮，時不時給書中人物冠以的“離婚專傢太太”，“戰爭寶寶”等綽號，腹黑地點到父親與瓦倫蒂娜丈夫稱呼彼此教名的《戰爭與和平》式的語言交流，風趣地展現女性各種錶裏不一的言辭，加上從頭至尾夾敘夾議的描述，以及引人入勝的各種“戰鬥”情節，一步步讓讀者親近英籍烏剋蘭移民曾經的過往歲月，最終明白，原來兩姐妹南轅北轍的人生道路源於聖誕節的公車上“那個給媽媽六便士的女人”，從那時候開始，妹妹“變成瞭一個終身的社會主義者”，而姐姐則“變成瞭那個穿皮大衣的女人”。更重要的是發現，原來那從烏剋蘭來的“波提切利的齣水維納斯”瓦倫蒂娜是多麼像我們身邊那些追逐金錢、既狡猾又愚蠢的“外嫁新娘”，而她那個“他可以成為完美的妻子”的前夫又是多麼理想主義的依然東歐化。
