A Letter from a Student
I have noticed at least one serious problem on our campus: there is a serious lack of study areas. Dorm rooms are too small and too noisy. The library is cold, the sound echoes, and there is too much foot traffic. Classrooms are usually holding classes. I think the university should provide students with a study lounge featuring tables, chairs, and maybe some couches. This way we would have a quiet place to study. If there were a few private rooms there, students from the same class could gather together and discuss their study.
Now hear a conversation between two students.
Question: The man expresses his opinion about the proposal given by a student suggesting that the school establish a study lounge for students. State his opinion and explain the reasons he gives for holding that opinion.
Preparation Time: 30 Seconds
Response Time: 60 Seconds
Solution
Question 1
Describe a social activity you have participated in. Do you believe everyone had a good time? Please include specific details in your explanation.
Response(参考答案)
Topic I recently went to a New Year’s Eve party with about two dozen friends.
Reason 1 This New Year’s Eve was very cold in Beijing, and the bar where we had the party was not heated. I saw many people standing around in their coats and sweaters, and they looked very chilly. As the night went on, it got colder and colder still!
Reason 2 Another problem was that some young lovers seemed to be having disagreements that night, and everyone could hear them arguing. This made other people very uncomfortable.
Question 2
Do you think 16 year olds are responsible enough to drive? Please include specific details in your explanation.
Response(参考答案)
Topic I do not agree that people that age are responsible enough to drive.
Reason 1 First, driving can be very dangerous if one is not careful, and teens are often careless and easily distracted while driving. This is one reason they should not be permitted to drive.
Reason 2 Second, teens are known for texting on their cell phones, playing music via car stereos, eating food, and socializing with friends while driving. It has been proven that teens cause more road accidents than adults, who tend to be more attentive and responsible. To keep traffic deaths down, I think teens should be required to wait until they’re 18 years old to drive.
Conclusion I think the legal driving age should be raised to 18.
Question 3
Conversation
W: Hi George, did you read the letter from a student suggesting that the school should find a study lounge for us?
M: Yep, I think it is great!
W: Really? Why do you think so? I didn’t think anyone else would care very much about it.
M: Well, if there was a lounge, we would all know where we could go to study and won’t have to wander around looking for places to open our books between classes. The study lounge could really save us a lot of time.
W: You have that problem too? I thought maybe it was because I was new here that I couldn’t find a place.
M: Nah, it happens to everyone. You know, we only have thirty minutes between classes. That’s not a long interval. Lots of times, I spend twenty minutes trying to find an empty classroom. Waste twenty minutes to use ten! No way! We need that lounge.
W: Well, thanks. That’s really good to hear we think the same way.
M: Let’s hope others share our outlook. A lounge would give students in the same class a place to get together and discuss different ideas. I’m taking “Hamlet” right now in the drama department. There’s a lot I don’t understand about it. If we had a place to come together, we could help each other puzzle out the answers to our questions and not waste half the class asking the professor. Maybe that guy’s letter will wake up the university administration.
W: I hope so.
