江湖上的走镖方式有三，一是威武镖，二是仁义镖，三是偷镖。威武镖是在行李上长插一杆大纛旗，旗上写明镖师的名字，招摇过市。因旗杆上安了轱辘，所以旗面能活动。走镖时拉贯顶旗，也就是将镖旗拉至顶上，打起长槌，发出“哐！哐！”的锣声，镖手们或亮起噪门喊号子，或者干脆嚷出本镖局江湖名号，这就是亮镖威。走仁义镖，则是下半旗，打十三太保长槌锣、五星锣或七星锣。而偷镖的情况则是，如果事先知晓某个关卡因实力不济难以闯过，索性悄无声息地摘了马铃，给车轱辘打好油，收起旗子，偷偷摸摸地过去。
