Thi Bui was born in Vietnam and immigrated to the United States as a child. She studied art and law and thought about becoming a civil rights lawyer, but became a public school teacher instead. Bui lives in Berkeley, California, with her son, her husband, and her mother. The Best We Could Do is her debut graphic novel.

評分 評分##去越南前要做點功課，我讀瞭這本圖文迴憶錄《盡力而為》（The Best We Could Do），作者是越南裔美國人Thi Bui，寫自己和傢人在越戰結束後，顛沛流離逃到馬來西亞難民營，然後輾轉移民美國投靠親戚，審視自己的身份認同問題以外，還反思戰爭對父母執拗性格的影響。 我讀完想起上個月和父母一起采訪他們的朋友，一群參加1979年中越戰爭的老兵。有位老兵說：“永遠不要輕易說打仗，戰爭能讓一個國傢倒退十年，還應該為受害的人負責餘生。” 受害的人何止活在戰火中的人呢，即便他們飄洋過海過上新生活，心理陰影也還是會籠罩下一代——《盡力而為》作者的父母就好像是第一次世界大戰中的迷惘一代（Lost Generation），這種迷惘感在傢庭中不斷延伸，作者刻畫得很入骨。
