　　本次漢英對照版《紅樓夢》，前八十迴的英文部分以霍剋思先生翻譯的企鵝齣版社《石頭記》（The Story Of the Stone，Penguin Books）1973年版第1捲、1977年版第二捲、1980年版第三捲為底本，參照霍剋思先生《紅樓夢英譯筆記》（香港嶺南大學文學與翻譯研究中心，2000年）及相關日記、書信，對現有譯文作瞭全麵係統的校訂。
　　中文部分則以人民文學齣版社1964年竪排版（啓功校注）為底本，主要參校《紅樓夢八十迴校本》（俞平伯校本）、《脂硯齋重評石頭記》（庚辰本）、《脂硯齋甲戌抄閱再評石頭記》（甲戌本）、《戚蓼生序本石頭記》（有正本）、《乾隆抄本百廿迴紅樓夢稿》（夢稿本），這些都是霍剋思先生在翻譯過程中主要參考過的本子。我們的目的是為讀者提供一個可靠的漢英對照本，同時如實地反映齣霍剋思先生在翻譯過程中到底做瞭哪些增刪改動，為翻譯研究者和愛好者提供參考。因為，讀者可以清楚地看到，霍剋思的八十迴英譯本，是與現存各種脂本程本都不一樣的本子，我們不妨稱之為"霍本"。這個奇特英譯《紅樓夢》，真實地反映瞭霍剋思先生在翻譯過程中的諸多努力。霍剋思先生已於2009年7月仙逝。在生前最後幾個月內，他還在不斷地修改自己的譯文。
　　《紅樓夢（套裝1-5捲）》也落實瞭這些修改意見。
