在美國，一個不去輔導班補課、不花大價錢去學習纔藝參加社會活動去豐富自己履曆的孩子幾乎沒有可能進入名牌大學。歐洲的情況好一點，因為當地的社會福利較高，很多學生能夠較容易地進入好大學，可是這不並意味著在公立中學沒有打下良好基礎的他們能順利畢業。我在魯汶時曾驚訝於大學生天天狂歡，一位教授冷冷地告訴我：“他們中的大多數人不過是來這裏吃喝幾年，體驗一下生活。有三分之二的學生是拿不到學位的。”
